USA –-(Ammoland.com)- The Idaho State Journal and East Idaho News.com report on 09-08-2017 in Downey, Idaho, a 34 year old intruder from Pocatello forced his way through the door of the residence on Barnes Lane off Highway 40 around 4 a.m. on Friday morning.
According to the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the intruder was fatally shot by the homeowner. He was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene prior to the arrival of responding sheriff’s deputies.
Authorities said no charges are pending against the resident because all indications are that the man opened fire in defense of himself and other family members who were at home at the time.
Authorities said based on their findings thus far in the investigation all indications are that the 34 year old intruder was invading the home when he was killed.
The Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy is being performed on deceased to determine how many times he was shot. The Sheriff’s Office wanted to make it clear that it appears the deceased was acting alone and “there is no evidence indicating any further threat” to public safety as a result of the apparent home invasion.
The Sheriff’s Office is not yet commenting on what type of gun was used to kill the intruder or whether he was armed as well. The name of the resident is not going to be released, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The deceased was released from the Bannock County Jail about two weeks ago after being arrested on a felony drug charge.
The autopsy will also determine if his actions were drug or alcohol induced.
Having a firearm available in your home to protect your family proves to be a critical consideration yet again. I’d expect there are very few unarmed homes in Eastern Idaho.
